Christina is one of the bravest artists I know. She took everything in stride (getting sopping wet, braving the wind, bracing the cold) as I got these gorgeous shots on the shore of Lake Michigan. Our inspiration for this shoot was dark mermaid. Christine did some pretty great mermaid makeup - thanks Pinterest! I love the bold lip color. She also brought some amazing material to work with, which snubbed the traditional mermaid tail we were going for originally. Sometimes the best photos can come from necessity, like when the two of you can't remember how you managed to make a mermaid tale out of cardboard two years ago. Ha! We call this our dark mermaid, one that unapologetically ditched her fins for feet.
I've had the honor of working with Christina on a number of collaborative shoots that I like to call "The Creature Series." The process is as follows. Christina gets inspired, Christina contacts Kelsey with inspiration, Kelsey gets inspired, then Christina and Kelsey find random locations and props and make art. So far we've done a beached mermaid, a fallen angel, and now - a forest nymph! I love the use of the word "Creature" for this series, as it derives from the latin word creare meaning "something created." We are creating, thus these sessions subjects are creatures. Christina is extremely intuitive and takes my (cryptic) direction so well. I adore working with her. Working on these shoots is always exhilarating and reignites my love of photography after a dry spell.
Next up in The Creature Series is the fallen angel. All we know is she came from above, she's here now, and she has wings - at least for now.
